Season Group to acquire Havant-based Outsource Electronics Limited

Posted 16.05.2013

Season Group, the global vertically integrated EMS provider, today announced that it is in the process of acquiring Outsource Electronics Limited (OEL) in the UK. The deal is expected to be concluded in June.

Speaking of the acquisition, Carl Hung, President and COO of Season Group stated: “We have been working closely with OEL for around 18 months on a number of projects.

“During this time we have had excellent feedback from customers involved in these joint activities; a testimony that they clearly value the opportunity to validate their designs in the UK before moving production to Season Group’s other sites.

“OEL’s established customers have also seen the opportunity to leverage Season Group’s in-house cable and plastics capabilities and some are looking to consolidate all of their products - some of which are with other UK and Far East suppliers, to Season Group.

“As a result we are confident that the relationship has already had a positive effect on both Season Group and OEL business. Bringing OEL formally within the Season Group will give customers the confidence to accelerate this activity and, I believe, will attract new customers.

“As well as proving the benefits of the business model over the past year, we have also developed a great respect for the OEL management team - and we are delighted that they have chosen to join the Season Group team.”

Through this acquisition, Season Group is ensuring that it is well placed to respond to the growing trend towards right shoring – where products are built in the ideal geographic location to minimise cost whilst also achieving the necessary supply chain flexibility for the customer’s end market.

For many Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), the benefits of manufacturing products at Season Group’s Malaysia and China sites will continue to provide the best overall solution – especially as the opportunities for OEMs to increase sales in those markets continue to grow.

However, those same customers are seeing that some of their product portfolio is best manufactured “in region” – and with the addition of OEL, Season Group can now provide PCBA, Electromechanical Assembly, Cable Assembly and After Market Services in both Europe and North America.

Commenting on the acquisition, Chris Coldbreath, Managing Director of OEL said: “We believe that this is the right time to join forces with Season Group.

“We are certain that this move will bring major benefits to our customers, employees and suppliers. Having worked with the Season Group team on a number of projects, we have developed an excellent working relationship.

“We will also continue our plans to develop the Havant site and to leverage Season Group’s knowledge of quality processes to accelerate our plans to achieve AS9100 in the near future.”

Big data opportunity for embedded systems firms - DSP Design

DSP looks to launch new range of products following investment from Season Group

Posted 27.02.2013

Chesterfield-based DSP Design will be launching a new range of Freescale embedded processors at Embedded World 2013 which takes place in Nuremberg, Germany between February 26th and 28th.

The new product range, which offers developers both flexibility and rapid development to ensure accelerated time to market, comes within months of DSP Design’s acquisition by global Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) provider, Season Group.

DSP Design has many years experience of designing RISC based boards using both ARM and MIPS technologies, with products successfully used by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) operating in the Security, Safety, Medical and Industrial markets.

These latest designs utilise the ARM® Cortex™-A9 architecture in processors from Freescale’s iMX processor family.

Known as the Freedom-SG family of processor boards, these PCBAs range from the iMX28 at the low end of the performance spectrum through to the flagship product the iMX6Q Quad core processor.

Matthew Caffrey, General Manager at DSP Design, said: "In between these boards are the single and dual core offering of the iMX6.

"Uniquely this family of processor boards all use the same carrier board to provide real-world connectivity. The robust design uses a SODIMM connector to securely attach to a carrier board."

He added: "DSP's expertise lies in designing production-ready products which share the common features of low power and small form factor.

"In line with our close relationship with Microsoft, all our processor boards are supported with the Windows Embedded Compact operating system – making them ready to go."

Since its acquisition by Season Group at the end of 2012, DSP Design has accelerated its product development with a host of new products due to be launched during the course of this year.

DSP Design also offer bespoke design services providing processor boards which meet customers' exact specification and requirements.

This further enables Season to provide enhanced design support to its key customers in Europe – as well as expanding its capabilities to provide a range of Embedded Systems on a global basis.

Carl Hung, President for Season Group, said: "Season's salesforce in Germany and the USA is now actively promoting the DSP product line and we are already seeing significant new customer interest.

"Design forms a vital part of our vertical integration strategy and we are delighted to launch these products at Embedded World which is a well-known gathering place for engineers from around the world to view the latest developments in embedded design."

As a vertically integrated EMS provider, Season specialises in design, complex electromechanical assembly, PCBA, plastic injection moulding, thermoforming, cable & harness, logistics and after market services. The Group provides high-quality products and solutions suited for a wide range of applications in the medical, industrial, automotive, safety and security, environmental and communications markets from its manufacturing capabilities in Canada, USA, UK, Germany, China, Hong Kong and Malaysia.

Throughout the Embedded World Exhibition you can find DSP Design at the Microsoft stand in Hall 5 – stand 340.
